I've been chipping away at Mary Chestnut's Civil War since then. Mary drops as many names as Mrs. Grant, but she's certainly not as ...pompous or self-centered as the First Lady.
Interesting tidbit - Mary talks about "having the blues" - in the 1880s! I thought that was a 20th Century expression.
